Landsbanki Guernsey Crisis & Alistair Darling's Inaction

Alistair Darling is the UK Chancellor of the Exchequor. He and his treasury cronies worked out the details of freezing Icelands assets in the UK.

The treasury statement said: "The Chancellor has taken action today to protect the retail depositors in two Icelandic owned banks: Icesave, a UK-based branch of Landsbanki and Heritable, a UK-based banking subsidiary of Landsbanki. He has taken this action to ensure the stability of the UK financial system. Saversí money is safe and secure."

Saversí money is safe and secure is it Mr Darling? Does that include Landsbanki Guernsey savers? The UK resident savers? The UK passport holding savers? The people of Guernsey - a Crown Dependancy - viewed by the world (including foreign investors) as part of the UK financial system, and thus secure. Is the Landsbanki savers money safe Mr Darling?

The treasury also said: "The Treasury and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme are working with the Icelandic authorities and their Deposit Insurance Scheme to ensure that depositors are paid back as quickly as possible. The Chancellor has also spoken to the Icelandic Finance Minister about the importance of the Icelandic authorities ensuring that UK depositors in Icesave are given the same protections as depositors in Iceland and receive their deposits back in full promptly."

As the UK is obliged to represent Guernsey abroad, is the treasury also dealing with the Iceland government on behalf of Landsbanki Guernsey savers specifically? If not, why not? If so, why not say so with reassuring details?

It turns out that various councils, the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London all had money in Icelandic banks. YOU are helping those bodies; why not the Landsbanki Guernsey savers? Many of these people pay Council Tax and vote in the UK also.

Can the Landsbanki Guernsey savers get a statement from Alistair Darling about our position? Can we have detail on what the UK government is doing to represent the island of Guernsey in this crisis?

Media: Please contact Alistair Darling and ask him what he is doing about Landsbanki Guernsey Savers.
